Educator Profile: Gerry Volpe

Gerry Volpe

For me, Gerry Volpe is one of those people that is such a natural fit with his job that I could swear he’s been doing it forever. Needless to say, I was surprised when Gerry told me that this is only his third academic year as Castleton’s Coordinator of Disability Services.

Gerry joined our Castleton community after twenty years of working full time in alternative education and outdoor behavioral health plus some part-time teaching at Green Mountain College. With a background like that it’s no wonder that he’s so adept at making the necessary connections between students, faculty and staff! When asked to share more about his role as an educator, Gerry informed me:

At my best I like to think that I have a small part in facilitating our student’s understanding of themselves as learners and in providing some guidance during this incredibly important stage of life. I help students to develop accommodation plans that provide them with equal access to educational opportunities. I also do a great deal of academic counseling. This includes helping students with time management, organization, study skills, connecting them with outside resources, and supporting them on academic tasks. Nothing is more motivating than being able to support our students as they pursue and achieve their goals. Developing relationships with them and being there for them is incredibly rewarding. Similarly, the relationships I have with Castleton faculty and staff are also a great motivator. We truly have an amazing collection of human beings here.

Lately Gerry has been helping students, faculty, and staff work through technological troubles with providing educational access, so he truly has had front row seats to witnessing our incredible community work together to make sure our students get the education they deserve. His facilitation of the connections between students, faculty, and staff with the information and tools that are necessary for educational access is an integral contribution to our students’ success and a great illustration of how important it is for all of us educators to communicate with each other.
