Volume 6

Week 7! We’re (approximately) halfway there!

As we alluded to last week, many of us are starting to feel spread too thin. Sure, the courses have hit a rhythm now and you’re being conscientious about how your students are feeling (and supporting them however you can), but how are you doing?

Taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your students!

Whether you participate in Friday meditation hour, work out the stress through exercise, or just make time to rest your Zoom-weary eyes, we want to encourage you to build some “you time” into your schedule. That’s why the theme of this week’s volume of The Educator is self-care.

  • Pedagogy Tips features guest author Dr. Shannon Newell writing on Self-Care.
  • Our Educator Profile features another campus self-care advocate, the inestimable Martha Coulter.
  • Tech Tips features some ways to save you from eyestrain and combat Zoom Fatigue. (Yes! Zoom Fatigue is a real thing!)
  • Have You Seen… shares a brief written by West Ed that summarizes available research and best practices for educators to practice self-care during the Coronavirus crisis.

Did you know?  The Wellness Center is reporting that student use of resources is down from this time last year.  We don’t think that that is a result of reduced need!  You can direct students to the Virtual Web Resources Page from ANY page in Canvas via the “Virtual Web Resources” link in the left menu and any Castleton webpage via the “Student Resources” link in the top banner with the COVID updates.  This page has links to all of the student support offices on Canvas in one place, including Zoom links were they can make an appointment. You can see emails sent to students about these resources in the Key Communications section of Remote Delivery Resources.

Upcoming Workshop:  If learning new things provides you with respite, make sure you check out this week’s IDC Workshop! It will take place on Wednesday 9/30 from 1 – 2 pm and we’ll be learning about how to add Quizzes to your YuJa videos with Gary Ackerman! You can join the workshop using the Zoom page in the Remote Delivery Resources Canvas course, no RSVPs necessary. Unable to attend? Don’t worry, it’ll be recorded so you can check it out later.

Recording Available:  Last Thursday’s workshop on Flipgrid with Nick Edwards is now available on the Remote Delivery Resources site in the Workshop Module.

Whatever you choose to do, we hope you take some time to re-center this week so that we can all push through to the end of the semester without burning out!

…why are you still sitting here reading? Take a break from your screen and go for a walk already!
