Upcoming Events: Supporting Students’ Mental Wellness

From  Martha Coulter and Amy Bremel

A syllabus suggestion for your first week of class:  Please include a statement such as the following where students can see it now and throughout the semester:
Your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing are as important to me as your academic work in this class. Please know that CU offers free Health and Mental Health services at the  Wellness Center.  If you are struggling due to personal, family, financial or other issues, please let me know and I will assist you in finding the help you need.  Please do not disappear – stay in touch by email or phone!
Upcoming presentations:  We will be offering 3 presentations for faculty and staff related to student mental health issues. These presentations will be via zoom on the following Wednesdays at 2pm: Feb.17, Feb. 24, and March 3.  We will be sending out a survey monkey soon with five suggested topics and ask you to choose three that would be most interesting or useful for you as an educator.
Student Support Network Training Opportunity:   We will also be offering Student Support Network training for interested faculty and staff on Wednesdays at from 2 – 3pm,  March 10 – April 21.  The Student Support Network training consists of 7 one-hour sessions and includes information regarding typical mental health issues experienced by college students as well as guided practice in effectively interacting with students of concern.

Important Faculty Survey:  Please consider participating in the “Role of Faculty in Student Mental Health” survey on behalf of Castleton. You should be receiving an invitation to participate in your Castleton email starting February 1. While the study is part of a national effort, Castleton will receive data about needs at our institution that we hope to utilize to better serve our students. The email is coming from the survey administrators at Boston University, so it will have the red external sender warning at the top. Please be assured that this is not spam and is a real request for your participation in an important study on an important topic. Below is some information about the survey partners and goals for your reference.

The study is focused on understanding the role of faculty members in supporting student mental health. In its pilot year, the survey is a collaboration between the Boston University School of Public Health, the Mary Christie Foundation, and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.

This online survey is confidential and will take faculty members <10 minutes to complete.

The main goals of the survey are to:

•         Better understand faculty perceptions of student behavioral and mental health needs

•         Assess challenges and opportunities that exist for faculty to recognize and respond to student needs

•         Identify faculty preferences for further training around mental health

•         Use these data to strengthen initiatives addressing faculty’s role as mental health ‘gatekeepers’ in colleges and universities
