On the Importance of Mid-semester Grades

Now that we’re past the halfway point, that means we’re also past the posting of Midsemester Grades.

Despite the confusion of needing to post them from Canvas, an incredible 91.8% of the full time faculty and a respectable 73.6% of the part time faculty got their mid-semester grades in for all of their classes in on time!

To those of you that got them in on time: Thank you! Mid-semester grades play an important role in the success of our students; now more than ever.

Mid-semester grades allow us to set up alerts in Aviso that congratulate the students who are doing well and encourage them to keep up their hard work. They also allow us to set up alerts to notify students who are in trouble as well as notify members of the support structure who can reach out and offer assistance to those students.

The theory is: students that feel supported and like their hard work is noticed and rewarded are more likely to continue their success. Furthermore, students that receive help when they need it to get their grades turned around are less likely to fail the class which in turn keeps their GPA up which keeps them off probation thus making them more likely to (successfully) continue with classes.

But these results depend on knowing the students’ grades which depends on you keeping an accurate Canvas gradebook and submitting mid-semester grades!

So again: thank you to all of you who got those grades submitted! Our plans to increase student success wouldn’t succeed without you.
