This Fall in the Center for Teaching and Learning

Well, it has been an eventful year in the world of teaching and learning in the Vermont State Colleges.  With the work of Transformation and supporting our F2F+ pilot projects, staff changes and the work to establish the VTSU CTL, the resources of your friendly teaching and learning professionals are a little stretched these days.  However, I’m pleased to announce that the Castleton CTL is open and ready to offer you the following services this term:

Individual consultation:  Need someone to talk with about what happened in your class last night?  About an idea for a course? About what to make of the new course modalities?  Drop Chris a note at ceb10070(at)vsc.edu.  I’m here to support you and/or put you in touch with the right person.  For Canvas questions and all matters of remote delivery, you can still always email CUCanvas@Castleton.edu, or put in an IT Service Desk request.

Small Grants for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning:  Last spring we held a workshop series focused on innovation in teaching and learning and assessing your success.  This term, you can still apply for a small grant to design an SOTL research study and implement it this term or next.  For details, visit this page.

Book Club Fall 2022The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath.  This book is back by popular demand.  Many of us read this book in 2020 and were all set to talk about it together, when things went sideways.  Well, folks have been suggesting that we revisit that conversation.  So, we will!  If you would like to participate (and if you need a copy of the book), please let Chris know by responding to the Fall 2022 interest form. We will be scheduling some discussion meetings after fall break.

Book Club Spring 2023:  Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning by Peter C. Brown. This is an engaging and serious effort to survey learning science and suggest practical applications.  Meetings will start with our return in January. If you would like to participate and receive a copy of the book, please let Chris know by responding to the Fall 2022 interest form.

Castleton Mentors:  A really successful program from last fall:  Join with colleagues in a “teaching square.”  Small groups of faculty agree to meet with one another to talk about teaching and visit each other’s courses in a low-stress, informal kind of way.  The CTL provides the structure (and will buy you lunch in Huden for your meetings), and small groups take it and run with it.  The first organizational meeting will be held Thursday, September 15 at 4PM.  If that time doesn’t work for you but you still want to participate, that’s OK.  Please respond to the Fall 2022 interest form if you would like to join this program.

Workshops and Presentations:  We are working on a schedule of workshops and presentations, some live and in-person, some held over Zoom.  This is going to be one HUGE advantage of working with colleagues across the system to share our efforts supporting faculty!  A schedule is forthcoming, but you can keep up by following the CTL Events Calendar (coming soon)

Have an idea for a program or suggestion about how the CTL can meet an unmet need?  Please respond to the Fall 2022 interest form, as well.  There is a question about that at the bottom of the page.
