Have You Seen…? (Volume 19)

This one seems nowhere near most of our wheelhouses, as it comes from the online journal Advances in Engineering Education. But it concerns something we all are grappling with: student engagement in online classes.

Active Student Engagement in Online STEM Classes: Approaches and Recommendations

by Richard Felder, Michael Prince and Rebecca Brent

The authors present helpful conclusions and researched-based tactics to promote student engagement. You don’t have to be an engineer to make use of these tactics; it is actually very generalist in its sensibilities. The authors provide ideas for establishing teaching presence in the course, setting up clear policies, conducting formative assessment, and handling student resistance. An enlightening read.
