From the Canvas Coaches’ Corner… Why You Should Use The Gradebook

Week 5 has come and gone. “But wait!” you say, “I didn’t have to enter any 5 week grades for students through webservices?” No, you didn’t. That’s because as long as you’re keeping your Gradebook up to date in Canvas, all of our first year students’ advisors have access to their grades and can help them accordingly.

This is because the Gradebook in Canvas communicates directly with our new advising software, Aviso. This means, as long as your Gradebook is kept up to date and accurately computing the student’s current grade, Aviso knows what the student’s current grade is in your course. If Aviso knows the student’s grades, then the student’s advisor(s) also know.

But wait! There’s more!

As you likely saw in your email last week, Aviso can be set up to issue automatic alerts based on students’ performance in their classes. Can you imagine a future where you no longer need to make time to compute grades, log in to webservices, and type in said grades for each of our classes in order to complete 5 week reports? Heck, with this level of automation we could even send out alerts more frequently than that, say Week 4, Week 7, and Week 10!

So, maybe you’ve been convinced. Now what? How do you go about setting up your Gradebook?

You want to help your students succeed and keeping their grade up to date in the Gradebook helps keep them aware of how they’re doing in your class.

We want to help you succeed in keeping your Gradebook up to date so please keep us aware of what kind of additional support and resources you’d like to see!
